ABOUT US
On 08.08.08 Jan Van den Bergh - a Belgium born interactive marketer based in
Shanghai - launched on the global market a silk e-commerce platform presenting Yufeng: a new collection of art in silk.
Yufeng is the brandname of this
1st line of 100% handmade precious silk using the old and complicated kesi
technique.
The visuals of their first series are almost all very old, but strikingly
modern looking Chinese icons. They also added to this series 1 contemporary
design by a young Malaysian designer Anne Ng.
Yufeng is fully and actively supported by the Suzhou Silk Museum in China
with which Yufeng closed an exclusive deal for the next 5 years. Suzhou is the
cradle not only of the silk industry 5000 years ago, but also of this complicated kesi weaving technique.
The specialists of the Museum will
supervise and guarantee the quality and authenticity of the Yufeng handwoven
collection. Each kesi piece of art will be accompanied by an authentication
document of the Museum.
Founder Jan Van den Bergh says: "We very much appreciate the active support
of the Museum in the last several months and will continue to honour the
exclusivity they granted us for the next 5 years."
In the future Yufeng launches new "silk paintings" designs every 6-8 weeks:
always a mix of traditional and contemporary design. The artifacts will also
appear as from 2009 on in designer handbags, wedding dresses and home
furniture - all of them in the luxury layer of the market.
When Jan Van den Bergh first arrived in China beginning of 2006 he was surprised
to see there where not yet that many strong Chinese brands in the luxury segment - although there is such a rich Chinese culture to build on. When he met by accident the director of the Suzhou Silk
Museum he sensed a unique opportunity to develop a Chinese luxury
brand based on this very valuable and old silk weaving technique.
Yufeng also wanted to symbolically launch on 08.08.08. So their e-commerce
platform is still very fresh. Jan Van den Bergh admits there are still some flaws in it. Yufeng Silk is his brandnew brainchild and he plans to let it organically grow - building on the expertise and close cooperation with silk lovers in the art-, fashion- and design-industries worldwide.
