ABOUT US

Imagine a 3-D sphere, a globe with multi-layered dimensions constantly growing and updating as it is infused with peer reviewed scientific material.

Mission: WikiEarth will gather collective knowledge on a global scale. This system will provide communities, governments and companies with the latest information on the Earth’s condition. WikiEarth will harness disparate data into a single, peer-validated platform.

WikiEarth is the first collaborative earth and ocean science data website of its kind. The internet-based tool will allow scientists, academics, graduate researchers and students to share climate change data, citable results and the social implications of research findings. An easy to use platform allows users to filter information geographically or across related data fields. Imagine a 3-D sphere, a globe with multi-layered dimensions constantly growing and updating as it is infused with peer reviewed scientific material. What will set WikiEarth apart is its unique ability to filter and classify information. Using an open source ontological data entry system will allow researchers to extract and use data from the website with ease.

WikiEarth is currently in Beta stage. We launched this platform at the International Youth Environmental Summit in the Summer of 2009.

At this summit, Dr. R. K. Pauchauri, Chair of the IPCC & Nobel laureate, and Dr. Mukesh Kapila CBE, Humanitarian Agent where the main presenters. We worked with the Summit to partner with Universities around the world. During a trial period, scientists from Universities around the world worked on providing data focused on one specific issue.

The results from the project were showcased via the WikiEarth Platfrom on the final day of this global summit.

"WikiEarth is a means to democratize access to information by giving ordinary people a way to make a difference in their own lives and ultimately the lives of everyone on the planet"
Quoted: Dr. Mukesh Kapila - CBE (Commander of the British Order of the Empire)

[Dr. Kapila is Special Representative to the Secretary General of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), Adviser to the World Bank on climate change issues, and has advised the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN/ISDR). He is a member of the Board of Trustees of the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), the International Peace Academy (IPA) and of the United Nations Disaster Assessment and Co-ordination (UNDAC) system.]

Yes, Ben and I will be attending the 2009 ISWC in Washington, DC this year. We'll be doing a demo of WikiEarth on the 27th of October, and we'll spend the rest of our time learning and sharing knowledge. Some folks from the Cognitive Atlas (an interesting semantic web app for the neurosciences) project will be there, and I am looking forward to meeting them in person.
