Supercritical Fluid Extraction (SFE) technology allows the manufacture of plant extracts of high quality and purity with no toxic or flammable wastes. CO2 is mostly used as SFE solvent due to its zero toxicity, availability and economical cost. SFE is the basis of Planifolia S.A., an industry devoted to the manufacture of premium natural extracts through SFE technology. Planifolia production will be oriented primarily to industrial food customers in North America and Europe. A raw material study was conducted to find most valuable products in Costa Rica. Selected products are: organic vanilla extract, beta-carotene (from residual fiber of oil palm fruit, a waste) and bixin (from annatto seed).
