Major technical advances in fields like imaging, gene therapy and minimally invasive devices are rapidly turning many medical specialties into ever more predictable sciences. A considerable gap remains, however, between DNA and other laboratory analysis on one side and the real time monitoring of macroscopic vital signs of the organism like heart rate or oxygenation on the other. Physicians charged with saving the very sick from death have painfully few dependable and relevant monitoring tools at their disposal. Photonics Healthcare thus will for the first time give doctors access to information about what really matters for life: cellular respiration and viability.
