• On Feb. 24th, Exergy Technologies submitted a $1M grant proposal for the Advanced Heavy-Duty Natural Gas Engine program with the California Energy Commission. The proposal was submitted in collaboration with California State University Sacramento. The project would prototype and test the first engine to use these advanced compound engine thermodynamic cycles. The team is currently evaluating engines for the project. The top candidates are GM's Vortec 4200 engine, which is an I6 with DOHC and VVT, and the 3rd generation 6.7L Cummins diesel, which is also an I6 and has SOHC and no VVT, but can handle higher pressures without structural modifications. Estimated efficiency gains are 30% at the first stage design pressures of 120 bar. The third stage program will target 300 bar pressures for an estimated 70% efficiency gain. The primary target market is gasoline, ethanol and natural gas engines for light-trucks and distributed generation.
