Carbon Diem was born out of a frustration with current carbon accounting systems for travel.
They demand the user to manually input data each time they travel; every form of transport they used and how long each journey took. In todays time-poor environment this is highly impractical and would appeal to only those truly dedicated to reducing their carbon footprint.
Current systems are also lacking a scalable platform and provide no sense of feedback or inclusiveness.
Research has shown that for a system to have a broad appeal it needs to be easy to use and learn.
ABI Research expects the market for GPS-enabled handsets to grow strongly in the next five years, from around 260 million handsets in 2007 to more than 900 million handset shipments in 2013.
Carbon Diem solves all these problems by utilizing GPS and mobile phones to give accurate, real-time information with virtually no user interaction and without compromising the individuals privacy. The amount of carbon used can then be utilized in numerous ways. The user can set personal targets or compare against others. Companies can collect the data and work out their usage across all their employees.
