WORK EXPERIENCE
Employer:
Lindsey Press, Unitarian GA Publications Panel
Position:
Researcher
Time period:
March 2005 - December 2005
Description:
I was sourcing a new portfolio of bookshops so that a forthcoming book can reach a wider audience. The data was collected from directory websites, filtered to their criteria and presented in a MS Access database and MS Excel files.
Employer:
Direct Payments for Care Services
Position:
Fund holder
Time period:
March 2004 - March 2007
Description:
Direct Payments is a scheme that empowers disabled people to purchase their own care services. I was motivated to start the scheme because I needed a better service than the one I was currently receiving. The change was challenging but I like achieving the results. The initial user needs assessment did not adequately reflect my needs so I negotiated a larger budget. I now manage the finance and human resources aspects of employing care assistants, including creating systems and fostering relationships. I also have responsibility for the contracts and performance appraisal.
Employer:
Young Enterprise Graduate Programme
Position:
Operations Director
Time period:
November 2003 - May 2004
Description:
Young Enterprise Graduate Scheme gives university students the opportunity to set up and run their own company, organised here by Oxford Entrepreneurs. I chose the strategic position of Operations Director because I felt the best route to profitability was through quality suppliers and designing a product to a price. Our team, UNEEK, were constrained by only having one academic year and only having capital of £700. Our initial idea was to publish a guide to the Colleges as a book. This needed a larger amount of capital and would take too long to sell. Instead I suggested publishing on CD-ROM because it allows us to have a more innovative product at a lower cost and risk. I sourced and analysed some UK companies and chose the most competitive one for a small order quantity. Then I negotiated our requirements for a case and inlay. At the end of the year we achieved a 50% dividend for our shareholders.
Employer:
British Unitarian Annual Meetings
Position:
Newsletter Editor
Time period:
April 2003 - April 2003
Description:
The British Unitarian Annual meetings are always reported on with a daily newsletter that is published overnight by the Foy Society. In 2003 they were very short of volunteers and did not have an editor until the last minute when I stepped in. When I was faced with the impossible task of publishing a 16-page newsletter with 1 person to help, I decided that it was better to publish something that is ready for sale in the morning and edited it down to 8 pages. The following day there were more volunteers around who published the remaining material.
