WORK EXPERIENCE

Employer: California Institute of Technology
Position: Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship scheme (SURF)
Time period: December 2005 - November 2006
Description: • Research project: “Defining and investigating complexity in digital evolution”, supervised by Professor Christoph Adami. Aimed to understand how evolving organisms adapt better to their environment over time. The organisms under investigation were the completely digital creatures of the evolution simulator program “Avida”. Project involved detailed application of mathematical knowledge, specifically Shannon information theory, programming in C++, and experimental runs on a high-performance computing cluster.

Employer: Oxford Instruments Superconductivity sponsorship scheme
Position: Trainee cryogenic engineer
Time period: December 2001 - November 2005
Description: • Gave a presentation on knowledge management within the company in 2005, noted that some of the work done on various projects was partially a replication of earlier work, finding this out was difficult due to fragmented nature of company documents. Submitted a suggestion that the company purchase off-the-shelf hardware and software from Google to internally index and search the mass of data (hundreds of gigabytes) of company documents.
• Learned about cryogenic systems, completed conceptual/design work on projects including a heat exchanger and a gas handling manifold, a sensitive vibration characterization experiment on a cryogen free ultra-low temperature system. Submitted several official company reports on work completed and gave annual presentations to an assessment panel.

Employer: Qinetiq, Malvern
Position: Engineering Education scheme
Time period: December 2000 - November 2001
Description: • Designed and built an intelligent infra-red beam occlusion rain gauge at Qinetiq, Malvern as part of the Engineering Education Scheme. Completed project exhibited at the National Exhibition Centre, Birmingham.

After trading California for Scotland, I recently completed my MSc at University of Edinburgh. I'm now very happily working on a product launch, and am also still attached to uni groups iCUE and E-Club.
