In 2000, Philippe Dufour founded PrePay Technologies, the U.K.’s first prepaid processor and the first to launch closed-loop and open-loop programs, creator of the revolutionary Splash Plastic, a reloadable prepaid card targeted at youth and unbanked, and 360money Affinity, Britain’s largest prepay network.
In 2007, he sold PrePay Technologies to Accor Services.
In February 2009 Accor Services, announced a joint venture with MasterCard. The new company renamed PrePay Solutions, will focus on rewards and loyalty, gift cards, corporate expense and payroll cards for the underbanked in addition to Accor Services’ emphasis on prepaid government benefits and meal vouchers.
Dufour is one of two deputy CEOs of this ground-breaking joint venture. He will focus on acquisitions, marketing and corporate development.
“We have plenty of opportunities to extend the knowledge and experience to a much larger scale and different ambitions, especially with the support of two active shareholders having such global footprint,” he says.
He brings vast expertise to the table, having founded PrePay Technologies. Under his command, PrePay Technologies assembled a unique set of competences to unleash unparalleled innovations; the first reloadable prepaid card for the unbanked, the first department store gift card, the first multi-retail chain incentive card, the first instant-issue travel money card, the first hybrid gift card, the first insurance claim card and the first top-up aggregated cash network. He made innovation credible by focusing sales only on well known brands like Virgin Money, Debenhams, Western Union, New Look, Sainsbury’s, Ticketmaster and more; As a result, in 2008 PrePay Technologies represented 80% percent of cards sold at gift card malls throughout the U.K and managed more than 20m cards across all prepaid sectors.
The new joint venture hopes to capture a significant portion of sector growth - 5 percent of a $130 billion industry - within five years. Accor owns 67 percent with MasterCard taking 33 percent. PrePay Solutions aims to bring scale to a business that operated in only a few countries. The name change reflects the profundity of PrePay Solutions’ global strategy and an effort to move beyond the reach of PrePay Technologies.
