WORK EXPERIENCE

Employer: National College of Natural Medicine, 049 SW Porter, Portland, OR
Position: Information Technology Director and Chief Information Officer
Time period: December 2003 - August 2008
Description: Responsible for the administration of the entire computer-related environment at the main college campus, a complex of administrative offices, and two off-site clinics. Supervised a staff of three IT coordinators, and sat on several committees, e.g: the Council for Academic Affairs, the Web Site Task Force, the Council for Financial Affairs, the Clinic Development Team and the Institutional Review Board for Research Projects.
Planned and coordinated major modernization and re-configuration of the college’s computing and telecommunication environment, including wireless access for students and faculty and selection and implementation of a web-based student information system (SONIS).

Employer: Western States Chiropractic College
Position: Manager of Information Systems and Programmer Analyst, Research Dept
Time period: January 1995 - December 2003
Description: When the college received its first major research grant from the federal government, I was asked to step in at short notice to re-write the software package that had been supplied to the research department by an outside consulting firm. (It had proved too cumbersome in daily use, particularly for data entry and follow-up questionnaire management.) From then on I was seconded to Research, providing all aspects of computer support for the department, including:

hardware and software installation / maintenance
network domain installation / maintenance / security (Windows NT Server)
scannable form design for data acquisition (Cardiff Teleform)
data extraction (export to SPSS for statistical analysis)
data analysis for descriptive statistics
presentation graphics design (Corel and MS PowerPoint)

I also co-authored several published articles detailing and analyzing the research studies which we conducted during this time period.

During periods of less than 100% funding for research, I continued my work in the college environment by extracting and analyzing data for use in the admissions arena, designing and running systems for faculty, staff and student surveys, designing the data entry forms and performing the analysis for course evaluations, and updating the packages I wrote for the registrar, financial aid, and continuing education.

Programming Environment: MS Windows (95, 98, NT, XP), MS Office
Visual Studio, specializing in Visual FoxPro
(Note: Visual FoxPro provides an excellent front end for MS SQL)

Employer: Western States Chiropractic College
Position: Director, Computer Services
Time period: January 1982 - December 1995
Description: Took the college from the two micro-computers (Ohio Scientific and Tandy Radio Shack) present on campus in late 1982 through the mini-computer years (1984-1989), installing and running an IBM System 36. Novell networks followed, until the Windows environment allowed networking – starting with Windows 3.1 and 3.11 for workgroups. Novell and NT servers co-existed for a while until the mid 90’s when I decided on rationalizing to NT platforms. In 1989 into the first part of 1990 I had one employee in my department, but at all other times I ran the college’s IT systems solo.

Wrote software to support registration, admissions, continuing education, development and alumni relations, plus numerous software aids for faculty (e.g. test question storage and retrieval.)

During this period I also performed data analysis for the college’s research effort, initially writing statistical analysis routines from scratch in Ohio Scientific Basic, then transferring all statistical data from the Ohio Scientific environment to our fledgling IBM PC systems.

I was proud to have been the co-developer of the Index to Chiropractic Literature, in company with Kay Irvine, the college’s head librarian at the time. Initially published in printed form, we took it into the electronic realm and distributed it world-wide in both formats. A development of the original is now available on WSCC’s website.

Programming Environment: MS Windows (3.11, 95, 98, NT), MS Office
Visual Studio, specializing in Visual FoxPro / Visual Basic

Trained numerous branch personnel in the day-to-day maintenance and operation of automated teller machines.

During my time at US National Bank I took a number of classes in the field of banking and computer programming through the bank’s college course tuition reimbursement system.

Organized initial data entry (supervised temporary staff of about 30), and subsequently maintained the database of merchants wishing to participate in the then-new Check Guarantee Card scheme. Wrote data analysis programs to look for patterns of abuse in withdrawals from ATMs. Collated and presented data to US Bank board members.

INFORMATION

Hobbies: Beyond the normal work day –

Over the past few years I have been working with a Canadian company in the development of various business tools written in Visual FoxPro and the Microsoft Office Suite. These tools will be marketed in the future through their business seminars.

My avocations include performing as a professional musician, recording music at a professional level, both for my own music group and for others, and organizing musical events and fundraising concerts (including the provision and set-up of high-quality amplification and sound reinforcement).

As a hobby, I also restore and maintain several classic cars, as well as offering help to others in this field.
