FULL BIO

Matthew has pursued dual careers in industry and academia. He currently serves as CEO and Chairman of Gene Security Network (GSN), which developed a biostatistics technology for determining the DNA of embryos using high-throughput genotyping of single cells. The company is funded by the National Institute of Health as well as venture firms such as Sequoia Capital. GSN is rolling out a service with the leading in-vitro fertilization centers in the US to help doctors minimize children’s susceptibilities to aneuploidy and inherited diseases. Prior to GSN, he co-founded two technology companies: The first (panop.com) developed a system for real-time intelligent merchandizing on the web and was sold for approximately $100M; the second (rosum.com) developed an indoor location technology using broadcast digital TV signals to augment GPS. Rosum was recognized as one of 30 Top Technology Pioneers for 2005 by the World Economic Forum. Matthew has authored several papers and patents in optimization, signal processing, machine learning and bioinformatics; and serves as an advisor or board member for multiple companies involved in communications, information systems, and “green” technology. He has received the Scott Helt Memorial Award from IEEE and was selected by MIT Technology Review Magazine as one of the top 35 technology innovators under 35 in the US. Matthew joined Stanford faculty in 2003, and is now a Consulting Associate Professor in Aeronatics and Astronautics. He completed his B.A., M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees at Stanford University, receiving the Levin and Terman Awards -- the highest undergraduate honors offered respectively in engineering and physics -- and a graduate fellowship to the School of Engineering.
