Before Words on Words
My life falls into three distinct sections. First in London where I was born, married and had two daughters. Then in the Thames Valley working in Marlow before going freelance and starting Words on Words - www.wordsonwords.co.uk. This freed me to move to West Dorset in 2004.
Oxford
I was lucky enough to go to Oxford University in the late 1960s to study French and German but switching to Psychology and Philosophy at the end of the first year. I've kept up my interest in foreign languages and have added some Spanish and Italian in later life - less so with the two Ps but they still inform my thinking.
London
After a variety of jobs in my '20s including teaching, driving a delivery truck, community work and running a travel company for incoming German school and student visits, I really found myself in my '30s through learning to computer program and then being invited to join one of the first Interactive Video production companies in London as a programmer, then as a designer and sometime project manager too.
Marlow, Bucks
This led to an invitation to join the Marlow company where Interactive Video morphed into multimedia and then into e learning as the Internet developed.
Lyme Regis, West Dorset
Gradually during this long period, it became clear to me that my main talent was as a communicator of the written word, in other words a writer for business be that training, marketing or just information and that I could make a living by doing that as a freelance. When the opportunity arose, I finally seized it. The moment of inspiration was realising that thanks to e mail and the internet this could be done literally anywhere in the country. So we moved to Lyme Regis where I have family roots and which is an outstandingly beautiful part of the Jurassic Coast which is a World Heritage Site.
Life in Lyme
My wife and I have become fully immersed in the life of what is a very active town with its theatre, working water mill and museum. We've recently been active in a 'Turn Lyme Green' campaign to voluntarily ban plastic bags from the town. Lyme is also rich in music and art and community spirit - a great place to live … and to visit. I do a weekly session as a volunteer at the Town Mill, help at the theatre, go to a book club and a poetry club when I'm not too busy plus love to sea swim in the summer months and explore the beautiful Dorset landscape on foot, by bike or all too often in the car.
My other activities are being a dad - I find one's daughters never entirely leave even when they are far away - and playing guitar and piano. I'm also a trustee and vice chair of a national Mental Health charity.
I'm an active member of Wessex Business Link Business Exchange, Marshwood Vale Rural Business Club, Dorset Business, 26 and, of course, ecademy with no plans for a fourth life stage at present as Words on Words continues to flourish under Dorset skies.
