FULL BIO
Jonas Runberger is an architect active in practice, research and education, currently based in Stockholm, Sweden. His main interests involve the relation between design techniques, architectural production and experiential effect, with an emphasis on the impact of digital technology on both experimental and conventional practice. Particular concerns within this field are protocols for collaborative design processes, digital technology as support in early design stages, experimentation and production, as well as the merging of digital and physical design aspects.
He has recently concluded the licentiate thesis of his design driven PhD at the KTH School of Architecture, and is continuing his research at the KTH School of Industrial Engineering and Management in the department of Project Communication.
The main focus of the PhD project has been the concept of prototypes within architectural research and practice and how they can operate as physical artefacts, digital parametric systems or sets of organisational rules. This is associated to recent developments within the building industry in regards to industrial processes, as well as experimental practice of architecture during the past decade. Previous research work includes studies on modular housing development in Scandinavia.
He has been teaching since 2000, most recently in the Architecture InFormation 4th year design studio and tutors diploma projects at the KTH School of Architecture, and is an external examiner for the Architecture & Digital Design Systems Masters program at London Metropolitan University. His previous teaching experience includes studios and workshops at the ETHZ (Zurich, Switzerland), the RMIT (Melbourne, Australia), as well as lectures and reviews at the Architectural Association (London), Columbia University (New York) and SCI-Arc (Los Angeles).
He is a founding partner of the research collaborative krets, director of the ssark medialab, a research and development division of Scheiwiller Svensson Architects, a frequent collaborator of Servo and runs his own practice.
