FULL BIO
Jason Massey has been working with startups over the last 10 years as a venture capitalist, founder, angel, advisor and janitor. He helped lead over 40 investments with $200 million in funds at Sands Brothers during the peak and after the original Internet Bubble...perfect timing! Having realized that the venture capitalists he admired most had true "in-the-trench" startup experience, Jason transitioned into business and strategic development roles at a few wireless startups including a WiMAX chip company, TeleCIS, which later sold to Qualcomm. In an attempt to gain additional "big company" operational experience Jason went on to lead strategic development efforts at publicly traded Covad Communication before its private equity acquisition.
Today, Jason is an angel investor in Tapulous, developer of the #1 iPhone and iPad app, Tap Tap, and an advisor to Mission Motors, maker of the fastest electric motorcycle. He is Chairman and interim President of Capire, a micropower startup spun out of MIT and Duke. And to further confuse his family, Jason started a green building materials company, Element Materials, back in his hometown of Mebane, NC after 8 years of living in Silicon Valley. He has poorly attempted to learn Mandarin through a joint program at Stanford and Peking Universities which put Jason on a path that would ultimately lead him to joining the China planning committee of Al Gore's The Climate Project.
His passion for educational breakthroughs started with his 6 year involvement as a mentor with BUILD.org in East Palo Alto and as a guest lecturer in entrepreneurship at his alma mater, NCSU. It was in one of those classes that Jason met a co-founder of MyFit.com which led to the formation of a college admission predictor startup that would ultimately lead a young team on a journey from the colleges of NC to the world famous Sand Hill Rd in Silicon Valley. Jason is always in search of his next adventure and journey with a startup team.
