Jack McGourty is the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies at The Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science, Columbia University and faculty member teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in engineering and product design, science, technology, and society studies, entrepreneurship, and technology management. He is also the founding Executive Director of the Center for Technology, Innovation, and Community Engagement (CTICE), the institutional home for community based learning at Columbia. Through CTICE, Jack oversees several academic and community based programs for the University including the newly instituted, federally funded regional Columbia-Harlem Small Business Development Center (SBDC). The SBDC offers technical assistance to local entrepreneurs and small business owners and links students to these local ventures through CTICE's engaged entrepreneurship program.
Jack received his Ph.D. in Applied Psychology from Stevens Institute of Technology with a focus on the management of technology and innovation. Jack is an active member in the American Society for Engineering Education and serves as a senior associate editor for the Journal of Engineering Education. He has published several articles and book chapters on education and technology management topics and is co-author of the Team Developer, a computerized multi-source assessment and leadership skill building system published by John Wiley & Sons.
Prior to coming to Columbia, Jack was a senior executive and board member of a large publicly traded company chaired by Harold Geneen, chairperson emeritus of ITT. During his tenure, Jack held several senior positions including vice president of human resources, executive vice president of operations, division president, and company chief operating officer. Jack was also a principal executive of Assessment Alternatives Inc., a consulting firm providing programs and services to medium and large technology companies on innovation and product development best practices.
