WORK EXPERIENCE
| Employer: | Imperial hall of residence “Garden and Weeks Hall” |
| Position: | Senior Hall Senior |
| Description: | This is a position awarded by the wardens of the hall to students who have significantly helped out during the year. The position means that I stay a further year in the halls and help out the new first years that will be arriving in October.
• My duties entail helping organise parties, liaising with the wardens in the hall, renovating the café in the hall, and generally helping out. • The 9 hall seniors are in charge of the welfare of all 150 first years in the hall and are the first point of contact if there are any issues in the hall or with their course. • Due to my position of Senior Hall Senior I am responsible for the other Seniors and delegate the duties of running the hall to the other members of the team. |
| Employer: | SSETI organisation in Imperial College |
| Position: | Head |
| Description: | SSETI stands for Student Space Exploration and Technology Initiative and it is a network of approximately 20 universities spread around 15 different countries.
• The first satellite was launched in October 2005 and it was called SSETI Express. This satellite went from conception to launch in a remarkable 18 months a current record for any satellite. It also broke another record by costing only €200,000 to build and launch. • The entire organisation is run by students with additional help only coming in the form of ESA’s experts. |
| Employer: | City and Guild’s College Union |
| Position: | Honorary Secretary |
| Description: | This is the engineering union of Imperial College with over 6000 members. I have helped run and plan events for the all the members of the union, including black tie dinners, balls, clubbing night, and Christmas giveaways. I am also in charge of raising sponsorship for the union and to date have secured almost £20,000. |
| Employer: | School Bank |
| Position: | Manager |
| Description: | I was Manager of the School Bank in Transition year which won the Munster School Bank Title in 2003.
• We setup a bank in our local school with the help of Allied Irish Bank (AIB), taking lodgements, ran competitions and promoted the bank environment. • As part of the competition I was one of the team who had to present a report to the head of the AIB in Cork and five other senior bank representatives. |
| Employer: | Chernobyl Children’s Project Outreach Group |
| Position: | Press Officer/Assistant Secretary |
| Description: | For a period of 18 months I was the Press Officer/Assistant Secretary for the local Chernobyl Children’s Project Outreach Group. This group runs a rest and recuperation programme for children from the eradiated areas close to Chernobyl. I had many duties and aims for my membership, these included:
• I arranged for all the Children who came to the local town to receive English lessons to give them a valuable skill that will hopefully benefit them in their future lives. • I fundraised for the local group on two separate occasions. The major one was when I designed, published and sold a Puppy Calendar (if you would like to view a copy please contact me). In this venture I raised over €1,500. I also fundraised by doing a 4 day 80km walk. |
| Employer: | Special Olympics |
| Position: | Volunteer |
| Description: | I volunteered to help at the Special Olympics when they were hosted in Ireland. I trained over a period of 4 months. I was given the position of Event Services Assistant at the Sailing venue in the Royal St. George Yacht Club in Dublin. During the period of the event I worked for 7 days approximately 10 hours a day. Such was my vigour for the work I was selected to work at the closing ceremony in the same capacity. |
| Employer: | Imperial College |
| Position: | Research Placement |
| Time period: | August 2007 - September 2007 |
| Description: | Through the UROP (Undergraduate Research Opportunity Project) Programme in the College I was given a placement in the Chemical Engineering Dept. I was given the responsibility of undertaking some new experiments. Over the two months I helped purchase, setup, troubleshoot the equipment required and run multiple experiments. After the experiments were run I analysed the results and presented them to the rest of the research group and professors. |
| Employer: | Jacobs Engineering |
| Position: | Summer Placement |
| Time period: | July 2007 - July 2007 |
| Description: | I was lucky enough to be given a placement working with the process engineering department. There I worked on a number of things ranging from reviewing drawings for errors, to creating equipment lists to representing the department at internal meetings. One of my main responsibilities was to do a hazard analysis on the plant that they were designing. I used my intuition to design an interactive spreadsheet which meant that in future projects it is a simple matter of imputing a few specifics and the results are displayed. |
| Employer: | Eli Lilly |
| Position: | Summer Placement |
| Time period: | June 2006 - September 2006 |
| Description: | I spent three months working in the Environmental Department of the site in Kinsale. There I work directly for the head of the department on a number of very different projects.
• I was assigned the lead role on a renovation project to modernise the main conference area and make it more useful. They wanted computers, overhead projectors and interactive whiteboards installed so I dealt with all different areas of the site and external contractors to ensure the project was completed. The facilities were put into use straight away with a plant shutdown being run from the area for the last two weeks of my stay. • I also was involved in a number of six sigma projects. During my stay there I was involved in an incinerator efficiency program that was starting and a general plant wide power efficiency program that was entering the data collection phase. • The main project for my stay was to bring the EC morning status meeting up to date. This involved consultations with everyone in the dept to see what they wanted from it, developing the system, testing it and making it user friendly. With the knowledge I had gained from the Six Sigma projects and wrote an excel six sigma program for use on the data collected and it would be automatically analysed. This system is still used today and is used to give clear presentations to the heads of the company when requested. |
| Employer: | Kinsale Yacht Club |
| Position: | Assistant Results Manager, Event Manager |
| Time period: | June 2001 - September 2005 |
| Description: | • I was responsible for imputing the results into the race office computer, managing the launch and recovery of boats and on shore administration such as prize giving.
• The main areas of work for me are logging data into the results computer and co-ordinating with the race officers on the water. • For larger events I liaise with the press officer to get the results published as soon as possible. • I have helped run a number of events in the club from local Optimist events, to national Championships, to the Dragons European Championships. |
