The development of a series of innovative shellfish farming techniques including purification systems developed under the auspices of MAFF.
The EU had proposed a new regulation where shellfish could only be marketed if they had been grown in a pure seawater environment. This rarely exists and historically shellfish had been 'finished' by treating them in special tanks for 36 hours where seawater in a closed system is blasted by ultra violet light. The bivalves clean any possible contamination out of their systems in this period of time.
I was in a moral dilemma as there was nobody in the Shellfish Association with the wherewithal and facilities to prove a system and that the proposed EU strictures were wrong. This took in excess of five years work, saved 3000 jobs in the UK but was a major project as no government agency had ever done any work on viral contamination in shellfish and were working only with e-coli!
