Brian McKenzie

Brian McKenzie is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Marketing and Entrepreneurship at California State University, East Bay (CSUEB). His research and teaching draw heavily on his 30 years as a successful entrepreneur and small business manager.

Brian received his BA in English Literature from the University of British Columbia in 1974 and his MBA from the University of Victoria in 1997. He is a master boat-builder and was awarded a Certificate of Qualification in the trade in 1990. He received his inter-disciplinary PhD from the University of Victoria in 2003.

Throughout his PhD studies, Brian was a lecturer in the University of Victoria’s Faculty of Business. He was a member of the teaching team, which won the 2000 United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship Model Undergraduate Program Award and the 1999 Academy of Management Entrepreneurship Division Innovations in Pedagogy Award. Brian spent the 1999-2000 academic year in Massachusetts in a visiting lectureship at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, where he assisted in the start-up of the WPI Venture Forum. Brian joined the faculty of California State University, East Bay In 2003. In 2008, Brian received the Marvin Remmich Outstanding Faculty Award for Teaching from his colleagues at California State University, East Bay.

Brian’s dissertation research worked towards the development of a grounded theory of entrepreneurship through the collection and analysis of oral histories of self-identified entrepreneurs. The dissertation was a finalist in the National Federation of Independent Business – Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice 2003 Dissertation Award. His paper “Collecting Oral Histories for Entrepreneurship Study” won the Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice Best Conceptual Paper Award, at the US Association of Small Business and Entrepreneurship (USASBE) 2004 meeting. He received the Best Reviewer Award at the 2006 USASBE meeting. His research has also been honored with Allied Academies Distinguished Research Awards in 2006 and 2007. He has published 7 academic articles, 13 conference proceedings, 5 monographs and has done countless public presentations.

Brian maintains a small, but active business consultancy. Over the past 12 years, he has assisted small to medium sized businesses in the fields of technology, yachting, logistics and bio-technology. Brian’s consulting work focuses on issues of market development, strategic planning and environmental sustainability, helping business managers develop a clear picture of ways to develop their business and sustain their communities.
