Seren Energy, see www.serenenergy.co.uk, specialises in wind energy and renewable energy advice. This includes the development of wind turbine schemes, the preparation of planning documents, and guidance on energy conservation and generation for landowners, local authorities and businesses. They are involved at all stages of renewable energy developments, acting as consultants and planning agents at the initial stages, and project managers and installers during construction. Their consultancy team is able to advise on energy conservation and generation with respect to a wide range of applications. In most cases, the fees are more than covered by the savings or generation potential that is identified. Seren Energy are committed to carrying out our business with a sense of responsibility, and will develop successful renewable energy schemes in order to combat the negative effects of global warming and help meet government targets. As a result of this they have been considering expanding their business into the distribution of solar hot water panels. They identified China as the source for these panels. First a business plan was produced which was subsequently submitted into a competition arranged by the Lancaster China Management Centre (LCMC), see Lancaster China Management Centre. On Friday 25th April, the Lancaster University Management School, through the LCMC hosted the semi-final of an important competition for those with ideas to develop business between China and the UK. The competition is for teams of Chinese students from around the world (though mostly in the UK) and involves them presenting business plans at what is a 'Dragon's Den' style event. The LCMC are hosting, in collaboration with the competition organisers – the China Innovation & Development Association, UK (CIDA UK) and the British Society of Chinese Entrepreneurs - the semi-final of the competition for the eight best plans. The final is scheduled for late June 2008 and will take place in London. The Seren Energy business plan was successful in the semi final and is now in the final. Zijun (BJ) Deng, a Seren Energy Ltd (www.serenenergy.co.uk) employee studying for a MBA in Swansea University has a developed the business plan to bring Chinese manufactured low-carbon energy equipment to UK businesses. Professor Andrew Henley, Head of the School of Business and Economics, says "I am delighted that our international student has made it successfully through the final of the China Innovation Development Association competition at Lancaster University. The standard of this highly original business proposal from Swansea is seen in the quality of the teams from the other competing institutions. I wish him well in the final." Professor Michael Adams, Chair of Finance at Swansea University's School of Business & Economics also says "The achievement of one of our students in getting to the semi-final of this high profile business competition is an excellent result and reflective of the high quality students that we now have studying on our business, economics and management courses at Swansea University. My colleagues and I wish him the best of luck in the next stages of the competition." Steve Hack, Director of Seren Energy, based in Clydach said, “This result is the consequence of much hard work and research carried out by BJ and clearly indicates that there are business opportunities in the environment sector.” The full programme for the day is attached below: Programme: Entrepreneurship Competition Semi-final The Panel of Judges are: - Professor David Brown, Chair (Professor of Information Systems and Director of the Lancaster China Management Centre) - Mr Vince Cunningham (China Business Adviser, China-Britain Business Council) - Mr Richard Barnsley (International Commercial Manager, HSBC Bank PLC) - Dr Xiangyu Sheng (Associate Director, Scott Wilson, Cambridge) - Mr Mark Underwood (Weldspares Ltd, Warrington) - Dr Nigel Lockett (Brunel University Business School) ENDS |
