| Description: | In 1989, I got my first break as an illustrator of children’s books. I drew regularly for Junior Quest, a monthly magazine for children, for nearly two years.
Also illustrated three books of a grammar textbook series of Orient Longman, Chennai. In 1994, I did simple animated cartoons for ‘Chiragukal,’ a TV series of Asianet that made picking up language skills a pleasure for young learners of Malayalam. Tulika Publishers’ ‘Eecha Poocha’ (1996) was the first picture book I illustrated. I attempted a treatment a la Duchamp, a style called Futurism, where multiple images are drawn to simulate movement in a static picture. Since then, I have worked on more than 14 books for Tulika, trying out a variety of styles and media. Other publishers I worked for: Scholastic India, Macmillan, Penguin India, Chandamama, Frank Brothers, Manoj Prakashan, Oxford University Press & Berryland Books. |

| Description: | In 2002, Wheitstone asked me to create a monthly comic for them. I wrote and drew ‘The Adventures of Teetee,’ a four-page funny. When a Singapore-based company outsourced two magazines to Wheitstone, I was given regular pages to write and draw. Mostly comics, and some activity pages.
Scholastic India published a series of ‘how to draw’ books called Sketch with Ashok Raj. Those were my first published books as a writer. This year, Penguin India published my ‘Witchsnare,’ a game book for the 9+ age group. |
