FULL BIO

In August 2011, l earned an International Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Master of Arts in Latin American and Caribbean Studies (MA) with Graduate Certificates in National Security Studies and African and African Diaspora Studies from Florida International University (FIU). In 2006, I earned a B.B.A. in Marketing Management and minors in International Business and Latin American Studies from the University of Notre Dame.

My academic career includes research on a wide array of issues and trends in global entrepreneurship and sustainable economic development, including: entrepreneurship in emerging economies, technology transfer in developing countries, the United Nations and civil society, transnational migration, economic development and entrepreneurship in frontier markets, agricultural knowledge systems, food insecurity and national security, sustainable urban food systems, and urban agriculture. I am currently researching micro-finance and mobile banking initiatives in the developing world with an emphasis on potential applications in post-earthquake Haiti.

My professional experience includes more than 5 years working in the public, private, and civil society sectors in the United States and abroad.

WORK EXPERIENCE

Employer: SUSTAINABLE ORGANIC INTEGRATED LIVELIHOODS
Position: Intern, Expert Volunteer Consultant
Time period: December 2009 - Present
Description: As an intern, oversaw SOIL's online communications (Facebook, Constant Contact Newsletters) following the January 2010 earthquake in Haiti, fielded media inquiries and provided SOIL with media coverage report. Invited by Director Dr. Sasha Kramer to be an Expert Volunteer Consultant on SOIL’s social impact business plan, program designs and assessments.

Position: Co-Founder
Time period: April 2009 - Present
Description: Co-founded Bochika, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to building capacity of community organizations. Created and manage Rasin Lavil Bay Lavi (Urban Roots Give Life), an urban gardening and nutritional education program in Haiti. This program was recognized by Clinton Global Initiative – U in April 2010 and distinguished by President Bill Clinton as an “outstanding” and “innovative” model for sustainable development and social impact. Developed grant proposals that secured full funding for Bochika’s programs in Haiti and Miami.

Description: Instructed a yearlong online economics research seminar course for the Honors College. Managed online course portal, created syllabus and student learning outcomes, assigned readings, graded papers, and advised students on research.

Position: Intern, NGO Branch
Time period: May 2010 - August 2010
Description: Proposed and implemented the social media and marketing launch of CSO Net, a new United Nations web portal for civil society. Attended high-level meetings of the Economic and Social Council as the official note-taker and prepared summary documents for the Chief of the NGO Branch. Reviewed Quadrennial Reports and applications for ECOSOC consultative status and corresponded with civil society organizations from around the world in English and French.

Description: Developed messaging and marketing content for brochures and videos to promote Florida International University's Latin American and Caribbean Center. Wrote, edited, developed and uploaded content to the Center's new website.

Description: Translated and drafted federal grant proposals, planned, coordinated and promoted events, conducted academic research and analyzed trends of Colombian migration, and assisted Director Dr. Ana Maria Bidegain with her course instruction.

Position: Associate Client Executive
Time period: August 2006 - June 2008
Description: Counseled clients on communications strategy and messaging. Performed account maintenance tasks, client relations, media and blogger relations, wrote press releases, awards and speaking submissions. Pioneered three very successful internal programs (mentorship, networking, and professional development) and created an analytical new method of PR measurement/metrics for UNISYS, a large client that was adopted by clients such as Recommind, Yahoo!, and NetIQ.

Description: Assisted Program Officer with Cuba research, attended Congressional meetings, and coordination and implementation of the LAWG Cuba Consultation 2005. Communicated daily with congressional offices, NGO’s and government agencies, and collaborated on position statements and press releases.

Position: Business Development Consultant Intern for Small Agricultural Producer

Description: Selected as only undergraduate in MBA internship and exchange program and awarded grant for full funding. Prepared business analysis, market research, strategic plan, and e-commerce website design for small agricultural cooperative in Mexico and presented recommendations to client and university and USAID representatives in English and Spanish.
