  • What is the UB Enterprise Competition?

    Hello everybody,

    I hope you've all started to write up your 3 pages and if you've haven't over Christmas is no better time!

    This is intended to be the full details of the competition, however please send on any questions you have to entrepren@csc.tcd.ie

    The competition is a two round enterprise competition run by the Trinity Entrepreneurial Society (TES). The first round is a 3 page business plan, which must be submitted before January 16th. The final is a dragon’s den style event in the Ed Burke in front of a full audience, which will take place in February. The finalists will get 3 minutes to pitch their idea before facing a grilling from a panel of judges. The winner will be announced at a reception in the Atrium.

    Why enter the competition?
    You have a lot of time on your hands and nothing to lose while in college
    It is the easiest enterprise competition in any third level college in Ireland.
    It’s fun (especially if you win)
    Fantastic experience of developing new ideas and public speaking
    Great opportunity to further your idea by receiving feedback from experienced judges
    Compete against Trinity's brightest entrepreneurs and be the first winner of the competition


    How to win
    You must present a creative idea with excellent execution

    Guideline Weighting Criteria
    Originality 20%
    Market Feasibility 25%
    Financial viability 25%
    Delivery (business plan and pitch) 30%


    The Business Plan: What to Include?
    3 pages – minimum size 12 font
    An executive Summary – this should be easily understood and can be read in less than 30 seconds.
    Core Product/Service offering – what is your actual idea.
    Marketing – how are you going to reach the customer
    Operations – how will the business operate
    Financials – funding requirements, revenue & profit projections
    Appendix of any data must be a maximum of 2 pages


    Rules
    Each competition entry must be comprised of Trinity College Dublin undergraduates registered for the 2008/9 academic year.
    The competition is open to all faculties.
    Students may be enter either as individuals or on a team-basis (cross-functional teams are encouraged) with a maximum of 3 students per team.
    Each entry must have a declaration stating that the content has been originally created by the person(s) on the team.
    The judges' decision is final.
    Finalists may update their business plan following feedback and advice from judges.
    The competition is not limited to certain types of ideas e.g. Technologically based, all sectors are eligible.
    Failure to adhere to this rule will result in expulsion from the competition.
    No officers in TES may enter the competition however OCM are open to enter the competition.


    Judging Panel

    Dr. Eoin O’ Neill - TCD Director of Entrepreneurship

    Eoin is the director of Entrepreneurship in Trinity College Dublin. TCD’s Entrepreneurship Training Programme uses linkages with best practices including those from Cluster Entrepreneurship programme, (a group of leading European universities), and from the REE STVP meeting forum. Dr O’Neill has over 35 years experience in the research, development and commercial deployment of new technologies in the United States and in Ireland. His entrepreneurship work is carried out on the Trinity Technology and Enterprise Campus, which is the largest Enterprise Centre in Ireland, and which houses Biotechnology incubators, and high tech companies, along with two seed capital funds.


    Dr. Mary Keating - TCD Business School

    Mary is an occupational psychologist. She has consulting experience in the area of Human Resource Management, specifically in management recruitment and compensation. She has extensive experience of the Review Body on higher Remuneration having represented both individuals and groups before the Review. She is a member of the Top Level Appointments Committee in the Irish public sector. Mary is a Research Fellow of the International Institute for Integration Studies (IIIS) at TCD and a Fellow of the Salzburg Seminar.


    Peter Sheridan - Enterprise Ireland

    Peter is responsible for new business development, Entrepreneurship and regional development, in the Dublin mid-east region.


    Alan Foy - Venture Wave Learning

    Alan Foy is a former ‘Business Student of the Year’ (2004). Before he had even graduated, Alan already had his own company established. He also came second in the Idea to Product Global University Competition at the University of Austin, Texas (USA) on 11 November 2006. He is now in the process of setting up a new company named Venture Waved Learning.


    Paul Kelly - Ulster Bank

    Paul is an associate director of Property Finance at Ulster Bank. He is a graduate of Trinity and was treasurer of the Hist society during his time in college.

    Dylan Collins - Omac Industries
    Dylan is a serial entrepreneur and another former Business student of the year (2002). He sold his company Phorest, which he had set up while studying at Trinity before going on to set up Demonware. This became one of the most successful companies in the games middleware sector. Dylan later sold this company in a multi-million deal to Activision and has gone on to found Omac Industries, which has operations now in Dublin, Los Angeles and Delhi.
