1. Prof. Igor Shvets - Trinity College Entrepreneur of the Year
This Tuesday the 3rd of Feburary, Prof Igor Shvets of the Physics Department will be giving a talk at 7:30 in the Schrodinger Lecture Theatre entitled "Intelligent Energy Options for the Future". In it he oulines the root of our addiction to fossil fuels, the pros and cons of various alternative energy options available to us, and proposes an alternative-alternative-energy source specifically suited to Ireland's resources and needs.
The talk is also of interest to members of the Entrepreneurial Society because Prof. Shvets has set up two companies following research within his group. Professor Shvets won the Trintity College Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 2005 and 2006. He holds over 50 patents and co-founded 2 companies, Deerac Fluids and Cellix. He also discusses his approach to launching and managing businesses and making Ireland a knowledge-based economy by forging links between universities and the business world.
Thanks to all who turned out on Wednesday to see the Corkman in action, it was an interesting talk on what's next for the global economy and the energy industry. Photos will be on our site shortly.
Special thanks to Tom Kelly who organised the whole event.
3. Dragon's Den comes to Trinity - February 19th Thursday
Put this date in your diaries and spread the word, this is where the entries to the Ulster Bank Enterprise Competition battle it out in a dragon's den style final in the Ed Burke Theatre. Arrangements are being made for the format of the final and details will be announced shortly but it promises to be an entertaining evening. The judges are still reviewing all entries....
4. Are you creative?
If you fancy yourself as a bit of a filmmaker or know somebody who is this might be of interest:
The European Commission is organising the first European Entrepreneurship Video Award (EEVA) in 2009 to give people a chance to reflect on entrepreneurship and discover what becoming an entrepreneur is all about.
The European Entrepreneurship Video Award 2009 is an opportunity for European cinema and business students to make original short videos on entrepreneurship. You are invited to participate in the contest and/or spread the word about. The best videos will be awarded a prize of EUR 3 000, the second best will receive EUR 2 000, the third best EUR 1 000.
Their role as film-makers would be to:
- produce a short, original and creative video on entrepreneurship in one of
three categories ("The entrepreneurial spirit"; "Innovative
Entrepreneurship"; "Responsible Entrepreneurship") categories that
should be understood all over Europe (between one minute and three
minutes long – not shorter, not longer);
- portray their ideas in the field of entrepreneurship;
- promote entrepreneurship across Europe, and encourage people to try
something new;
- destroy old prejudices and offer new visions of entrepreneurship;
- respect a minimum technical quality (digital format).
Email from Start Norway.. "We are a group of about 10-15 people who plan to come to Dublin on a study tour from Feb. 20 – Feb. 25. Our goal and objective for the tour will be to get a brief view of the "entrepreneurial ecosystem" in Dublin. In this context we are very interested, and would greatly appreciate to meet fellow minds in the Trinity Entrepreneurial Society."
These guys are looking to meet up either on Monday/Tuesday of Feb 23rd/24th in a hotel to have a workshop type event for a few hours to meet like minded entrepreneurial students. They have their own enterprise competition called the Venture Cup. The idea is to share experiences etc. We are in the process of seeing what we can organise but is there interest from TES members for something like this? Let us know!
