ABOUT US

Contracts and Intellectual Property Office:
The two main focus areas of the Contracts and IP Office (part of the Department of Research and Innovation Support - DRIS) are the protection of intellectual property and its successful commercialisation as well as the management of the research contracting process. IP protection includes all the aspects of intellectual asset management, from assessing inventions for patenting through to licensing these inventions to interested licensees. The office affords all researchers at the University an equal opportunity to obtain protection for their inventions.

This division works closely with Research Support, Legal Services, Human Resources and the Department of Finance. All Sponsored Research Contracts – especially those that contain IP clauses which are unacceptable to the University – are sent to Legal Services for comments and adjustments if necessary.

The University Finance Department is responsible for the management of funds received for Contract Research, the compilation of financial statements and dealing with financial queries regarding contracts. In addition, the division collaborates with Human Resources in terms of employment issues relating to remuneration of staff, subcontractors and students.

Research Contracting may also be undertaken via the wholly owned University campus company, Business Enterprizes at UP (BE at UP). The DRIS and BE at UP consult with each other regarding the most appropriate route for the management of Sponsored Research Contracts.
