1. Welcome to the September 2009 Newsletter!
Dear E-club member,
This is the first club newsletter of the 2009-2010 academic year. The calendar of events is already filling up! September kicks off with presentations of business ideas by club members on the 23rd and presentations by Edinburgh University entrepreneurship support services on the 30th. The first event is an opportunity to share a business idea that you have been developing over the summer or re-introduce a concept from last year. The subsequent support services event will direct you to funding and grants that can help make your idea a reality!
The first Entrepreneur in Residence sessions will be held with Professor Gavin Don during the day on September 28. Professor Don has a strong finance background and is an entrepreneur in his own right. He will confidentially listen to your business ideas and answer related questions. 2. Recent Awards: The ETTC Incubation Space and Summer Company Formation Grant Competitions
Student start-up gaming magazine Square-Go wins incubator space competition
The winners of the ETTC Incubator Space competition have been announced. First place: Edinburgh entrepreneur Josh Wilson and his startup gaming magazine Square-Go. The competition, sponsored by the Abbey Santander Group, offered local entrepreneurs the chance to win up to £2500 worth of office space.
Thomas Larsen, Enterprise Manager for Square-Go, said the company is very excited. “We’ve been working out of apartments and cafes for a year and a half,” he said. “Most business gets done at 2:00 a.m. It gets boring and frustrating after a while.”
Larsen said the company has accepted the prize, and will be moving into the Edinburgh Technology Transfer Centre at King’s Buildings, Edinburgh University's Science and Engineering campus, next week. Visitors are welcome, said Larsen, “but tell them to bring frisbees and bean bag chairs.”
Square-Go is the only free, independent gaming magazine in Scotland. Since launching, the company has posted nearly 500 articles to its website, and stocked its monthly magazine in Gamestations nationwide. This month, the website will get more than 100,000 hits.
Summer Company Formation Grant: Mechanical engineering graduate awarded £3000 for beer-monitoring project
LAUNCH.ed has announced the winner of its Summer Company Formation Grant: mechanical engineering graduate Brendan Corkery. Watch a brief video about Brendan and his project online. BEER!
While undertaking his dissertation last year, Brendan investigated a new product for stock management in high-volume bars and pubs. He was awarded a Summer Company Formation from LAUNCH.ed to continue working on the project. The award allowed him to access University labs and facilities over the summer, and gave him a £3000 stipend.

6. E-Club Members Develop Entrepreneurship Portal: StartupCafe!
Just launched this summer, StartupCafe is an exciting new blog that provides a fun and humorous place to go to for local startup news. They will be offering a uniquely relevant commentary on tech, startup and social media happenings while helping you make sense of events and funding opportunities. As if that is not enough, they also post job announcements and competitions – all with a dose of silliness. They are especially excited to showcase local startups and give them a place to shout out their successes. StartupCafe is the creation of four E-Clubbers who are active in the innovation community. You may know them as Thomas Drapier, Bela Hamid, Kate Ho, and Jessica Williamson; if not, you will likely cross paths soon. Drop by the cafe and say hi!
If you would like to have your business featured in the E-club newsletter, please email entrepreneurship@ed.ac.uk.
