    Welcome to the October E-club newsletter,

    There are two events occurring in the next two days.
    First, tomorrow is the initial Silicon Valley Speaker Series talk of the academic year with Dr. Jeffrey Ullman, (PhD supervisor of Sergey Brin!!!), on “The Google Story”.

    Dr. Jeffrey Ullman, an Emeritus Professor at Stanford University, will provide a behind-the-scenes look at the beginnings of Google, what happened, who played what roles, what impediments were overcome, and what role did the Stanford community play in facilitating the growth of Google.

    Then, the second E-club event of the week is entitled “Angel Investing in Scotland” by Barry Sealey and Peter Shakeshaft.

    Lecture Theatre 1, Business School, 7 Bristo Square

    Barry and Peter will explain the role of business angels in supporting young companies, both through investment and practical support. They will also explain how angel investing works and what steps entrepreneurs need to take to secure investment. They will compare angel investment with other sources of finance, highlighting the potential benefits of different approaches. This event will be followed by a drinks reception.

    Please plan on attending both of these highly anticipated events!

  • 2. E-club/Abbey Santander Pitching Competition. First prize £1000

    Wednesday, 14 October 2009, 18:30-22:00
    Lecture Theatre 1, Business School, 7 Bristo Square

    Come and listen to four Club members pitch their business ideas to an experienced panel of judges. This is the first Abbey-sponsored pitching competition of the year organised by the Club and an opportunity for the participants to hone their presentation skills. Participating Club members will have 5 minutes to pitch their idea and then take questions from the judges in a Dragon's Den-style format. Don't worry; it won't be that rough!

    The winner will be announced during the drinks reception afterwards.

    To apply to participate 1) you must be a member of the Edinburgh E-club, 2) your business must not be currently trading, 3) you are available to attend a follow-up dinner sponsored by Abbey on October 21st, and 4) you send 5 sentences on your business idea and contact information to entrepreneurship@ed.ac.uk by 12 noon on Friday. On Friday afternoon, we will be letting the finalists know that they will be pitching the following week.

    In this Silicon Valley Speaker Series talk by internet marketing consultant Sean Ellis, he will discuss the start of internet marketing specifically for start-ups. How can one use metrics to take a scientific approach to maximize the results of your online marketing push? What are the key things a good marketer has to understand, know, and do? Come and learn how it is done in the Valley. This event will be followed by a drinks reception. More information.
