  • 1. Abbey Santander Pitching Winner and Upcoming Events

    Welcome to the November Newsletter,

    There are several SVSS events in the coming weeks, as well as a fantastic Archangel Speaker Series event on November 9.

    First, congratulations to Jonathan Millin of Zoomatelo, who won £1000 with his carpooling website business idea! The pitching event was a great success and the audience learned about fellow club members businesses and the "Art of the Pitch". The pitching finalists included gifts of Vanity Theorems by Flaminia Cavallo, an RFID Personal Tracking System by David Luger, an sign translation app called SiReA by Carlos Isoard, and Interpersonal Map: A People's Relationship Network System Based On the Web by Jianming (Jeremy) Xi. Congratulations to all of the participants!

    The next Abbey Santander Pitching Competition will be in early 2010, probably February. The date is not set, but if you are interested in pitching, please email entrepreneurship@ed.ac.uk

Come and learn how it is done in the Valley.

    Angel investor and adjunct Berkeley Professor Jim Papp, will give a behind-the-scenes look at informal investment in the Bay Area. How has what angel investors look for in a deal changed in this economy? What is getting funded and what is it about these deals that is sparking the interest of these moneymen. What do entrepreneurs need to know to cater to these trends? What is hot, what are investors looking for, how are the terms? What do entrepreneurs need to know?

    Raising Business Angel Financing: Learning from the Band
    Masterclass from Informatics Ventures for Emerging ICT Companies in Scotland
    Dr. Jim Papp, CEO of Podaddies; Member of Band of Angels;
    Adjunct Professor, University of California-Berkeley School of Engineering

    This masterclass seminar is intended for managing directors, CEOs, and executives of early stage Scottish-based informatics start-up companies that are currently in the process of, or about to start the process of, raising angel capital. Jim will bring a "Silicon Valley Angel" perspective to the table, and talk about raising capital from that area's angels, as well as convey lessons that are universal and can be applied in the Scottish/UK and European contexts. Jim is a member of the Band of Angels, a high profile Bay-area angel network, and has served in leadership roles in the organization, and well as sitting on the deal screening committee. Jim is also an accomplished entrepreneur and active angel investor himself.

  • 4. Archangel Speaker Series: John Waddell and George Mackintosh on "Raising Finance for Young Companies"

    This talk will cover the raising of finance for young companies both from the entrepreneurs’ and the investors’ perspective. As CEO of Archangel, John is responsible for reviewing some 100 proposals and leading the investment of some £10-12 million in young companies each year. George, on the other hand, is a successful entrepreneur who has raised money, made money and is now an angel himself.

    "Building and Growing an Internet Startup" with Alexis Ohanian

    In this Silicon Valley Speaker Series talk, Alexis will discuss the founding and growth of his internet startup, Reddit. Reddit was incubated by the infamous Y Combinator, which operates a bootcamp-style startup school. How influential was this to his startup and what role did it play? What can our young aspiring internet entrepreneurs learn to increase their chances of success?
