    Last week's £1000 Abbey Santander pitch winner was Richard Burton of Hoodeasy. Richard, (http://www.hoodeasy.com), faced stiff competition from Cobb Vickers' of Beer Connoisseur's Pub, Josh Wilson of http://www.square-go.com, and Jim Wolff of http://www.ki-work.com. Congratulations Richard! The next Abbey pitching event will be May 4, 2009.

    The next EIR sessions with George Mackintosh and Professor Gavin Don will be in the new year.

    Come along to learn how a Silicon Valley Entrepreneur-in-Residence at a Venture Capital firm recognizes, discovers and assesses opportunities. Mike Ramsay is the founder of TiVo, and also an EIR and Venture Partner at NEA Ventures in Menlo Park, California. He is a graduate from the University of Edinburgh and currently is seeking high growth opportunities in the consumer technology space.


    Informatics Project Pitches to MBA/MSc Students
    Date: Thursday 30 October, 18:30-21:00
    Location: Lecture Theatre 4, Business School, 7 Bristo Square

    Are you looking for a project idea for your MBA dissertation? Do you want to present a research topic to your advisor with a technology component, but don't have any good ideas? This is an opportunity for students from the School of Informatics to join forces with MBA and Masters level students from the Business School. We will have a selection of projects that are in need of interested students including: Topic 1: Ontologies and Knowledge Management, Topic 2: Formal Methods of System Development, Topic 3: Commercial Potential in Coordinating the Deep Web, Topic 4: Workflow enabled Business Intelligence, Topic 5: Open Architecture based Virtual Organisation, and Topic 6: Healthcare markets for integrated decision and process support.

    The time table of the proposal presentation will be:

    6:30pm-7:00pm Prof. Alan Bundy, Topic 1 and 2
    7:00pm-7:15pm Prof. Dave Robertson, Topic 3
    7:15pm-8:00pm Dr. Jessica Chen-Burger, Topic 4, 5 and 6

    "Lessons from a Technology Entrepreneur" by Ajaz Ahmed, Founder of Freeserve and Browzar

    Come and hear about lessons learned from being a technology entrepreneur. Ajaz Ahmed, will provide some street-wise insight for those currently considering, or in the process of, creating and growing entrepreneurial ventures.

    Randy Haykin "On the Current Climate for Raising Angel Capital in Silicon Valley"

    Randy Haykin, an angel investor, venture capitalist, and founding VP of marketing for Yahoo, visits Scotland from Silicon Valley this evening. He will discuss the current climate for raising capital from angels in Silicon Valley. Also, he will answer such questions as What should entrepreneurs do to become more investor ready in this climate? What strategies should startup ventures persue? Come and learn more from an expert vetern, and learn more about early stage fundraising in the midst of a global recession and harsh climate for securing risk capital.


    "Opportunities in the Social Media Space and Channel 4’s Innovation for the Public Fund" by Ewan McIntosh

    Learn more about trends and opportunities in the social media space. Also, information will be shared about Channel 4's new "Innovation for the Public Fund", its operations and focus and engagement with entrepreneurs.

    Idea Generation Workshop

    LAUNCH.ed in conjunction with Edinburgh University Entrepreneurs society, are running an Ideas Generation Workshop. Led by James Barlow, the CEO of the Scottish Institute for Enterprise, this workshop will give you a useful toolkit of ways to think up new ideas or add some real innovation to your business ideas. This is all leading up to the LAUNCH.ed/SIE New Ideas competition, where, with just a business idea, you could win £2000!
