2. Tips
1. Determine who will be moderating the judging call - this will be the person who will keep the process on track and organize the discussion. The best moderators are skilled at regurgitating the general issues mentioned by the judges and assertive enough to herd the judges into consensus.
The moderator will say things like: 'What I hear is that this team's technical risk is too high to qualify as semifinalists. If any of you disagree with this assessment, this is the time to speak up. Otherwise, let's cross this team off the list"
2. Be ready to keep the time to a max. of two hours - also take notes to guide the discussion.
3. Have a clearly identified profile of the winners you are looking for from the judges and make sure the judges understand that they are choosing the semi finalist group, not the rankings. There is no point on discussing which of the top 3 teams is more likely to be a winner. Once it has been established that they meet the requirements of a finalist, move on.
4. At this stage of the judging process, it is customary to give the benefit of the doubt
to teams. For example, if a team is exciting but they would want to see more info on the technology, we can just assume that what the team claims is true until they pitch live in the final round.
5. Try to focus the discussion on the teams that create the most disagreement among the judges (teams with highest standard deviation).
6. Feel free to set a system to discuss each team. For example, technical judges share their perspective first and once technical feasibility is established, VC-types talk about the market opportunity.
