1. Seasonal Wishes from CUTEC!
Happy New Year with our best wishes for a successful 2012!!!
We hope everyone has enjoyed a lovely festive period and is getting ready for a fresh start of the academic year in few days. Please let us fulfil your diary with the first fundamental date: our Technology Venture Conference on the 22nd June @ Robinson College – more details will be shortly communicated via our website so don’t forget to check it out!
Furthermore, although CUTEC has not completely stopped over the Christmas break, our weekly General meeting at the Graduate Union will restart on Wednesday 18th January from 8.15pm as usual. We invite all the Vice Presidents and team members to gather together beforehand so all the new ideas will keep flowing smoothly during the session.

2. CUTEC’s TVC diary
This year CUTEC is inviting you behind the curtains of its biggest and most popular conference: the Technology Ventures Conference (TVC). The TVC will take place on the 22nd June at Robinson College. Thus, from January to June, the newsletter will present you the challenges faced by each single CUTEC team in the organisation of a large international conference.
The TVC is one of the world’s largest student-run entrepreneurial events, attracting worldwide high profile venture capitalists, entrepreneurs, and angel investors providing unmatched access to this community for student attendees.
Liz, our CUTEC’s President, is leading the club this year with the support of the Executive Committee (EC): Claire, Alexey, Neil, Andriy and Vivian. They constitute the core expertise, support and advise the five new Vice Presidents (VPs) who since their election (5th December) had to coordinate their teams, and distribute the workload amongst their members.
One of the great things about being part of CUTEC is the flexibility that it allows, albeit maintaining a high level of professionalism. Its members can get involved to the level that suit them best, according to their busy schedule. CUTEC members are typically students, BA, MA, MBA, and PhD, but there are also professionals. Some members even collaborate from outside the UK. This flexible model within the organisation poses a few challenges in itself. At the same time, it provides an excellent learning environment for all people involved.
The next six months are going to be an incredible learning curve for the members, even the first real working experience for some of them. It will pay back not only adding some good skills and experience to everyone’s CV, but also in forging characters, and creating life-long memories. Friendships will form in the midst of hours of panic and excitement in the run up to the TVC.
Will CUTEC leave another successful footprint in the Cambridge technology and enterprise network? Or will the challenges be too much for this year’s members? Can a student organisation compete against bigger and professionally planned conferences? If so, how can they do that? Step by step, the next six months will help unveiling this, perhaps in the hope to create a model, which will be followed by other student clubs in future.
This month the insight will be given by Ivan, Vice President from the External relations team:
“Throughout the Christmas break, the External Relations team has been working hard to further develop the media contacts which will be vital in gaining widespread interest in TVC 2012. As the majority of the team members were travelling across the world, either back home or on holiday, it was not easy to keep everyone organised and in contact - but with the hard work that was done throughout the past year, it was a well deserved break for all. One of our recent successes is a forthcoming article about CUTEC and the TVC in Entrepreneur Country, and as we move into the New Year we are looking forward to even more media coverage.”
Please do get in touch if you have any ideas and suggestions for our teams. We are always looking for new motivated individuals to join our organisation. Beware you’ll need to handle a challenge or two!
Likewise, drop us an email if you would like to get involved as a CUTEC sponsor or participate to the TVC Technology Showcase or the Diamond Exhibition (sponsorship@cutec.org).

9. Cambridge Technology Challenge
The challenge is simple. In teams of five, raise £1000 within two weeks for The Prince's Trust using the power of technology.
This is your opportunity to make a difference to the lives of young people in your local community. You will be competing with other technology firms in and around Cambridge. The two weeks will kick off on Wednesday 15th February with and action-packed day introduced with a webcast from John Caterer, Managing Director of Qualcomm and Vice Chair of The Prince’s Trust Technology Leadership Group.
The team raising the most funds will win the opportunity to have lunch with David Cleevely and John Caterer to pick their brains. A second prize will also be awarded for the most innovative use of technology. Competing teams will need to come up with an idea in advance. Companies will need to allow their employees one volunteering day on the 15th February, and teams will be given the following two weeks to raise the money.
Not only is this a fantastic opportunity to stretch the creativity of your employees, the funds raised will go towards supporting disadvantaged young people in the region. Last year The Trust helped over 3,500 young people in the East to change their lives for the better, and with your support, we can build on this success.
