  • 2. CUTEC Networking event "Don't work...network!" successfully completed

CUTEC successfully hosted over 180 students at their first Networking Event, held on March 7th at the Judge Business School, Cambridge, UK. The event attracted students representing 10 entrepreneurial clubs from France, Denmark, and the UK.

The event kicked off with biotechnology serial entrepreneur and business angel Dr. Andy Richards, giving insight into effective teamwork and how to make the most of a networking opportunity, before the leaders of each participating club introduced their organizations and members. Following a facilitated networking session between students, the big entrepreneurs made their guest star appearance!

Participants also had the opportunity to enjoy a tour of Cambridge before the networking session and a formal dinner in the evening.

The event caught the attention of the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) who reported on the afternoon’s activities: "Through the Higher Education Innovation Fund (HEIF) HEFCE supports HEIs in developing and undertaking a broad range of knowledge transfer activities which result in economic and social benefit to the UK. HEIF enables engagement with a wide range of business, public sector bodies and third sector partners. This includes support for the infrastructure for, and capacity-building in, enterprise education and projects. The recent and timely networking day held by CUTEC was an important event from Cambridge addressing these policy areas."

  • 3. CUTEC president meets Warren Buffett: tips to students

CUTEC President, Theodoros Koutroukides, and Cambridge University Entrepreneurs (CUE) Chairperson, Cong Cong Bo, represented the Cambridge University in a trip to meet Warren Buffett on 13th March 2009. Students from other schools including LBS, Oxford, Harvard, Stanford, and Wharton participated also in the 2-hour Q&A session and a lunch with the "Sage of Omaha."

Mr. Buffett encouraged potential future leaders of the world to NOT put over their entrepreneurial aspirations in view of the current "unfavorable" financial climate. He explained how he has lived his life without holding off anything, joking that a young entrepreneur postponing a start-up would be like "saving sex for old age."

Although not a high-tech investor himself, Mr. Buffett found the CUTEC concept interesting when invited to the Technology Ventures Conference. He stated that the primary quality of leaders is their communication ability (both oral and written), supporting systems that promote entrepreneurially-oriented students through a culture that allows them to practice their communication skills. Following-up with a comment in connection with the University Venture Fund (see http://www.uventurefund.com/), he said that "If these were around when I was in school, I'd probably still be in school."
