  • 2. RESERVE YOUR SEAT at the 28th Annual Entrepreneurship FORUM!

Demonstrating that the American Dream is alive and well in our schools, entrepreneurship educators from all over the nation will attend the 28th Annual Entrepreneurship FORUM, to be held in Columbus, Ohio, November 13-16, 2010. The audience represents entrepreneurship programs from elementary schools all the way through high school, college, and adult programs, bringing experiences and skills that open the eyes of students to opportunities to be self-reliant.

The featured keynote speaker is Michael Holthouse who will share his vision about "Youth, Lemonade, and the American Dream." Learn all about the conference online at http://www.entre-ed.org/_network/forum.htm.

SCHOLARSHIPS NOW AVAILABLE - The annual entrepreneurship education conference is unique in attracting sponsors who pay for scholarships for teachers to attend. This year the FORUM is providing 108 such scholarships for educators. The generous sponsors include The Appalachian Regional Commission, The Coleman Foundation, The Burton Morgan Foundation, Holthouse Foundation for Kids, Junior Achievement, and the members of the conference host, the Consortium for Entrepreneurship Education.

Deadline for scholarship applications is September 24. Apply online at http://www.entre-ed.org/_network/scholar.doc.

SPECIAL FORUM COST OPPORTUNITY - Based on multiple requests and recognition that the "back to school" rush makes it difficult to focus on November, Consortium officers have asked that we extend the deadline for the Early Registration Rate until FRIDAY, OCTOBER 1.

USE THE CONSORTIUM PAYSITE ( http://pay.entre-ed.org/ located on the entre-ed.org website) to complete the conference registration form for you and your guests.

    "Better Positioning through Entrepreneurship"
    28th Annual Entrepreneurship Forum - Pre-Conference Workshop
    Saturday, November 13, 2010 8:30 AM - 3:30 PM

Looking for ways to create student demand? Need to strengthen the perception of your business administration program? Join veteran teachers and national curriculum experts in this pre-conference workshop as they look at strategies for building a research-based program of study focused on entrepreneurship. They’ll work with you to get beyond “be-the-boss” dreams and “end-of-the-year” time fillers as they help you learn to balance the creative, risk-taking adventures of entrepreneurship with the strategic management and financial standards critical for getting beyond the dream.

Leave this session with hands-on experiences and a step-by-step process for creating a high school program-of-study that meets Perkins requirements as it helps you add excitement to your overall program. Discussion topics will focus on standards-based program-of-study design, instructional context, and project-based approaches to building student interest – and more.

  • 4. A NEW WAY TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE

“We are going to make money and then give it away,” said Don Mercer. “Go to the internet and check out www.myviewoftheworld.org and you can see how we are going to do it starting September 30. My partner, Carlos Fontana, and I are dedicating our efforts to help kids learn about achieving economic independence no matter where they live on the planet.”

Dr. Fontana, former corporate executive and educator in Battle Creek, explained that through entrepreneurship education starting with very young children, we can create the mindset that it will take to survive and thrive in the new global economy.

Generating the capital will come through a unique international photography contest. Aren’t there many photo contests out there now? Mr. Mercer explained that there are indeed existing contests, but none of the major ones are dedicated to philanthropy—giving away the proceeds. “But My View of the World will give the money away to organizations that teach youth entrepreneurship,” said Mr. Mercer.

Dr. Fontana added, “It is not big business that drives the economy forward or will turn it around from its current predicament. The real economic engine is created and fueled by entrepreneurs. And that’s true worldwide.”

So, Mercer and Fontana are out to change the world by giving people the opportunity to share their view of the world through a photo contest. “We only have a few bills to pay, but the majority of the money will go to helping youth shape the future economy,” said Mercer. “We are headquartered in Battle Creek, but our office is wherever we meet and in our computers.”

Then there is this quirky rule in the contest about having your feet in the photo! “It sounds strange at first,” said Mr. Mercer, “but that’s the point. It is the most unique photo contest in the world. It is like saying through your photo—look where I have been and look at what I saw.”

The website, www.myviewoftheworld.org, is open now for registration. On September 30, the site will be open for photos to be submitted and entered for 90 days, immediately after which the photos will be judged, winners chosen in four categories (humor, people, nature and all other) and in an overall winner. “It is an easy and inexpensive way to make a difference,” concluded Mercer. “At five dollars to submit a photo or twenty dollars to submit five photos, it is a new, fun and totally unique way to help make a difference.”
The grand prize winner will receive One thousand dollars cash! Category winners and second place will win one hundred and fifty dollars and fifty dollars respectively.
