  • 2. TED/Ashoka event: January 21, 2008 (Tentative time: 6:30-8:30pm; Location: TBA)

Join, Learn, Innovate: Catalyzing Change in Public Schools
Dave Eggers wants to collect a thousand stories of people engaging in the nation’s public schools. As a TED Prize winner, he’s working with TED to make it happen. And as big believers the power of individuals to create change, Ashoka is teaming up with the folks at TED to mobilize people with the capacity–either potential or realized–to make a profound difference in today’s public school system. On Wednesday, January 21, Ashoka’s University Program will bring together some of the area’s leading social entrepreneurs; students, faculty, and staff members from each of our area Changemaker Campuses; and high school youth directly affected by today’s lagging public education system. Hardly a typical cocktail hour, the evening is intended from the outset to drive action: an opportunity for attendees to hear from others committed to improving public education, and to catalyze innovative partnerships that leverage participants’ strengths and those of the institutions they represent.

The event will kick-off a competition between each of Ashoka’s four Changemaker Campuses to mobilize the largest number of innovative campus-community partnerships in the field of education. The winning Changemaker Campus will receive a prize package that includes a personalized message from Dave Eggers and a TED Associate Membership valued at $995.

  • 3. Changemaker Accelerator: January 30-February 1, 2008

Now that you’re all well underway, the Accelerator will be a chance for everyone to share insights and feedback, learn some of the how-to skills essential to social entrepreneurship, and learn how to apply some of the most effective strategies and tactics of other successful campus-wide movements and social entrepreneurship programs to your own efforts. Apart from facilitated team time and program strategizing, activities will focus on hands-on workshops, to ensure that all skills and insights relate directly back to your campus programs. Mirroring Ashoka Fellowship practices, the weekend will focus on peer-learning and problem-solving, providing ample time for the groups to intermix, share ideas, and tackle shared challenges. The goal? We want everyone to leave with a clear pitch; concrete metrics, and a well-defined plan to evaluate them; and actionable ideas and insights from other related university programs and initiatives

  • 4. March 24, 2009: University Network Day in Oxford, England

We have an entire day before the Skoll World Forum for the University Network, a joint partnership between Ashoka, Oxford’s Said Business School, the European Research Network, and the Social Enterprise Knowledge Network, and can devote at least half of that to showing off your work. Last year there were 200 attendees, including engaged faculty and university types working in the SE field around the world, and yes, we want you there! While you’ll be on your own as far as travel costs, we can write you an official invitation letter to shop around to departments or other funding pools on campus. We can play with the format, agenda, and objectives as we get closer, but for now, let us know if you’re interested, so that we can help you get started on the funding search and begin booking hotels.

  • 5. Happy Holidays!

Enjoy your break, and we'll see you in January!
